The tissue is thoroughly tested for diseases and infections to ensure it is healthy to use.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_5 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_24_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_divider_1 et_pb_divider_hidden et_pb_space et_pb_divider_position_top et_pb_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_divider_internal\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_3 et_pb_row et_flex_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_6 et_pb_column et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_12_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Indication for Keratoplasty<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_6 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p><strong>Optical indications -<\/strong> improving vision by replacing opaque or distorted host tissue with clear and regular tissue.<\/p>\n<p>The most common indications are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy.<\/li>\n<li>Keratoconus.<\/li>\n<li>Corneal degeneration.<\/li>\n<li>Keratoglobus.<\/li>\n<li>Corneal dystrophy (eg, Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy): these \u0003 form the bulk of the older patient group).<\/li>\n<li>Scarring due to infection or trauma.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Tectonic indications -<\/strong> to preserve corneal integrity in cases of corneal stromal thinning, corneal perforation or descemetoceles (ulcers extending into the stroma and exposing Descemet's membrane).<\/p>\n<p><strong> Therapeutic indications -<\/strong> this is rare, to remove inflamed corneal tissue which is not responding to other treatments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cosmetic indications -<\/strong> where the cornea has a whitish or opaque hue due to scarring.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_7 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_12_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_7 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Corneal transplant rejection<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_8 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\" data-et-mv-hidden-tablet=\"true\"><p>A corneal transplant may be rejected by your immune system. This happens in 7-10 % of patients in the first two years after transplantation and can cause graft failure. It can often be reversed in 90% if antirejection medication is started promptly, but rejection remains a possibility in your lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Full-thickness transplant<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is called a penetrating keratoplasty (PK). It is for patients where a partialthickness transplant would not be appropriate. This operation involves removing a circular piece of the damaged cornea and replaced<br \/>with a circular piece of the donor cornea tissue. The donor tissue is held in place by a series of small stitches for at least a year. The operation is most commonly carried out under general anaesthetic. Most patients go<br \/>home the same day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Partial-thickness transplants<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is an operation to transplant either the front or back portions of the cornea. It can offer a faster\u00a0 recovery, higher success rate and lower risk of complications. However, this type of operation is not suitable for everyone.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_4 et_pb_row et_flex_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_8 et_pb_column et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_12_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_5 et_pb_row et_pb_row_nested et_flex_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_9 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_24_24 et_flex_column_24_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_9 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK)<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_10 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\" data-et-mv-hidden-tablet=\"true\"><p>This procedure is used for patients where the disease process affects only the front portion of the cornea. For example, patients with keratoconus or corneal scarring affecting the top layers of the cornea.<\/p>\n<p>The benefit of this procedure is a lower risk of rejection compared with a full thickness transplant because the back layer of your original cornea remains . The survival of the graft with DALK is longer than with a penetrating keratoplasty.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_row_6 et_pb_row et_pb_row_nested et_flex_row\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_10 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_24_24 et_flex_column_24_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_11 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>Transplanting the back portion of the cornea<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_12 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><p>These procedures are used in patients where the disease affects only the cell layer at the back of the cornea. This could be due to a condition called Fuchs\u2019 endothelial dystrophy or secondary to problems related to previous eye surgery. Unlike the other types of corneal transplant, the graft is held in place by a temporary air bubble rather than a series of stitches. This means you will be asked to lie flat on your back for several hours after the procedure and will be reviewed before being sent home. The visual recovery is quicker<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_column_11 et_pb_column et-last-child et_flex_column et_pb_css_mix_blend_mode_passthrough et_flex_column_12_24 et_flex_column_12_24_tablet et_flex_column_24_24_phone\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_13 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\"><h2>After Corneal Transplant<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_14 et_pb_text et_pb_bg_layout_light et_pb_module et_block_module\"><div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\" data-et-mv-hidden-tablet=\"true\"><p>Your eye will feel uncomfortable and look bloodshot and swollen but please be assured this will settle over a few weeks. However, we advise you to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take the rest of the week off work, especially if you have had a general anaesthetic<\/li>\n<li>Do not rub your eye<\/li>\n<li>Avoid strenuous exercise and heavy lifting during the first two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Stay away from smoky or dusty environments<\/li>\n<li>Avoid contact sports and swimming until you have had a discussion with your surgeon<\/li>\n<li>Bath and shower as normal but don\u2019t get water in your eye during the first two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Wear the clear protective shield at night for the first two weeks<\/li>\n<li>Avoid driving until you feel comfortable to do so.
